13 Apr New Recruit Firefighters
Having been selected from over 200 applicants, nine new recruit firefighters have recently returned from the International Fire Training Centre at Durham Tees Valley Airport, having successfully completed their initial training course. The nine will now begin to refine their skills here at London Biggin Hill alongside our experienced team of firefighters before a new watch is formed. This significant investment in recruitment and training is in preparation for the implementation of the new airport opening hours.
The role of an airport firefighter is a varied one and in addition to responding to any aircraft emergency they provide a number of other important elements to ensure the smooth and safe running of the airport. These include immediate emergency trauma care for medical emergencies, essential ramp services such as aircraft marshalling and de-icing, wildlife hazard control, fire and first aid training for local companies, fire safety risk assessments and aviation security screening for our passengers and their baggage.
Our meet the firefighters event at the Lookout Cafe was hugely popular last year. You will be able to meet our Senior Airport Fire Officer Andy Mellers and his team there again later in the year, dates for this will be announced shortly.
